It is National Chocolate Week after all! Hoorah.
And yes chocolate is good for you contrary to popular belief.
In fact I don’t like to class foods as ‘bad’. I don’t believe this is a healthy attitude towards food.
It’s the type and the amount we eat that is important.
So let us look at the benefits of this delicious mouth watering food that makes most of us go weak at the knees at the mere thought of it.
Experts tell us that the benefits of dark chocolate far outweigh the milk and white variety.
They recommend eating one or two squares of dark chocolate every day is beneficial to our health because it is high in antioxidants.
Cocoa contains flavanols – a type of flavanoid – which help counteract free radicals in the body.
Dark chocolate has also been shown in studies to lower blood pressure and eating the stuff on a regular basis has been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol by as much as 10 per cent.
Cacao is also higher in magnesium than any other plant. The mineral helps the regulation of the digestive, neurological and cardiovascular systems.
If you need that mid afternoon pick me up, then ditch the donut in favour of some dark chocolate.
Furthermore researchers at California’s Salk Institute found that it can improve memory due to a chemical called epicatechin.
And if the thought of the clocks turning back at the end of the month (sorry had you forgotten?!) is making you miserable, then look no further than dark chocolate.
Chocolate contains serotonin, a natural anti-depressant to lift your mood.
I just wanted to give you a snapshot of the benefits of eating dark chocolate but these are just some of them. There are others.
So next time you want to sink your teeth into a creamy, velvety chocolate bar, reach out for the dark variety and enjoy it guilt free.
It’s clearly developed with the chocolate lover in mind because when I used I used it after a tough session at the gym, I was seriously satisfied with the smell of cocoa in it without wanting to eat any. (chocolate that is not the shower gel J )
Lush is another favourite of mine when I want to get a chocolate fix but not necessarily eat it.
