Tips to reach your health goals in 2012

Make sure you decide to never diet again and instead adopt a healthy approach to life in 2012 that will be sustainable. So how are you going to do that? I’ve been reading up on how to achieve goals which to be fair can be applied to any area of your life you want to improve and which certainly can apply to being healthy in 2010. So let me take it away……..

What motivates you?

Is it that you want to look good on holiday, a special birthday, a christening, a generally want to look good in your clothes and feel healthy? Whatever it is, get clear in your mind of what you want and then allow that to help you get through what you want to achieve.

Make a plan

If you were planning a holiday, you wouldn’t just expect to get there without having spoken to a travel agent, or booked the airline and the hotel? Well the same goes for your new healthy lifestyle. Make a plan in detail and let that get you to your destination.

Set goals

Goals will help measure success. If you don’t know where you want to end up, quite frankly you won’t get there. I’m sure you have heard of SMART goals? If not, allow me to spell them out for you 🙂

Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely

Take it Slow

One of the biggest mistakes people make when tackling a health issue is to try and overhaul it in one go. This is almost a recipe for disaster (pun intended 🙂 ) Spend a couple of weeks adjusting a goal at a time. For example if you are starting the gym, then start by going once a week, then in week three or four go twice a week and so on and so forth.

Prepare for lapses

We are all likely to fall off the wagon which is part of the process because let’s face it no one’s perfect. It’s important to take a breath and recognise why you fell off the track and get right back on it. Remember every day is a new day and a fresh one to start again.

Follow these rules and there’s no reason why you can’t achieve your goals whether they be choosing a healthier lifestyle, that new job, a new skill or whatever it is that you wish to do to enhance your life. You’ve one life, live it! Happy New Year!!
