Holiday season is definitely upon us and if you’ve been watching your weight and cutting back on unhealthy food, then you really don’t want to undo all that hard work before you even get a chance to change into
your bikini or shorts. You hurry to get to your airport two hours before your
flight. You wait to get through security check before your flight. You wait to
board your plane, then wait again at your arrival destination. And what about
food? When you’re rushed, you’re more likely to grab whatever grub is closest,
even if its super high in calories and low in nutrients. Worse still you may
not grab anything and for stale or junk food through the nose on the food that’s
available on your plane. So how does a health conscious traveller negotiate the
food offerings at airports?
Bring your own snacks
Pack easy to transport snacks and small meals that won’t
go bad in an hour or two like a peanut butter sandwich made on wholewheat bread
or an apple. Solid foods can be taken through security – liquids can’t. But a
bottle of water when get to the other side of security. I always like to pack
nuts and seeds in my bag for when I fancy a quick and filling snack that will
give me a boost of energy.
Know the healthier airport options
If you have a longish flight that doesn’t serve much healthy food and you fancy a hot meal at the airport before you board, then arrive a wee bit earlier and check out the
pubs. There is always always something healthy on the menu. You can have some
fish with vegetables, a salad with chicken or a jacket potato with beans. It’s
just a case of being food savvy. And if you really want to extra prepared, you can
check out the restaurants and bars at the airport online before you travel.
Eating when flying
On the plane when drinks and snacks are served, think about what you take. Even those small soft drinks and tiny bags of pretzels add unneeded calories and refined carbs. Have some water or some tea to fill you up and when you’re given your tray, just eat the main meal that is offered and not all the little bits of snacks that are added to it. You’ll be amazed at how many unnecessary calories you would otherwise be shovelling in your mouth.
Anyway why am I writing about healthy eating at the airports right now? Well Fitlass is off on holiday that’s why! And while I too need a break, my body doesn’t need one from healthy eating. I have lots of exploring to do, lots of things to see and of course I need to maintain a good level of exercise through swimming and walking while I’m out there. I’m sure many of you will be going away at some point this year and I wanted to show you that there is always a way to eat healthy no matter where you go! Happy holidays! 🙂
