Deep down we all know that there is no secret to losing weight and keeping it off other than the old age advice to “eat sensibly and exercise.” Yet why is it that people still ask “……..but what’s your secret to losing weight? How did you do it?” when they see someone in front of them who is now half the size they used to be? And of course matters aren’t helped by the media (steady!!) who plaster headlines like “Weight loss secrets revealed” or “Celebs tell us their secrets to losing weight” all over magazines and newspapers. It’s because we still want fast results to shedding those pounds no matter what. Even more so when we have that all important event looming in front of us and we have somewhat fallen off the bandwagon since we promised ourselves that we would lose that stubborn half a stone in time. Well, listen up carefully because I’m actually going to reveal some foods that may sound like a well kept secret in assisting you to shed weight. Some you may already have heard of and some may surprise you. Quite frankly the majority of these foods are staples in my cupboard or fridge and I wouldn’t be without a good few of them on a day to day basis.

Beans – These are packed full of fibre and help you feel full because they double your levels of cholecystokinin. This hormone works as a natural appetite regulator by slowing the rate at which your stomach empties.
Spinach – Popeye had it right when it comes to these leaves. They contain appetite suppressing proteins so they help cull hunger pangs after a meal.
Cinnamon – A danish should not be the only way this spice reaches your stomach. Eating this regularly can help reduce your blood glucose and ‘bad’ cholesterol and increases your ability to metabolise sugar. Ditch the sugar for a sprinkle of this spice in your cappuccino.
Vinegar – This beauty helps control the rise in insulin levels after a meal by slowing the rate at which your stomach empties. Instead of saturating your fish and chips in the stuff why not try stirring a couple of tablespoons of red wine vinegar onto meats to tenderise them. Alternatively balsamic vinegar added to a pan of rice can add flavour as well as stop them becoming sticky.
Pineapple – This tropical genius has fat burning capacities because it contains a chemical called enzyme bromelain which breaks down protein and raises the body’s metabolic rate.
Tomatoes – This fruit contains vitamin C and other acids which again aids your metabolic process. They also help the kidneys filter out large quantities of fatty deposits.
Lemon zest – Pectin found in lemon peel is a great source of fibre that helps weight loss by turning into a sticky gel when you digest it, preventing your stomach from absorbing sugar too quickly. Boffins have also found that it can eliminate the urge to snack for a good few hours.
Celery – These sticks are high in fibre preventing the urge to snack between meals. They also contain calcium which helps to bind waste fats and remove them from your body.
Horseradish – This spicy ingredient comes from the same family as wasabi and can help dissolve the fat inside your cells. Research also shows that it prevents you from getting hunger pangs later on in the day.
So go on experiment with your food a little, liven it up with some of these beauties and you’ll be on your way to burning even more fat!
