Feeling bloated?

Hands up those who knows what it’s like to feel bloated, whether it’s down to overeating or the time of the month (for us ladies) ? Pretty much all of us then eh?  Personally it’s one of the worst feeling ever and I have been doing some research on how to combat the problem. I am pleased to report that there are indeed a number of ways we can keep bloating at bay from drinking herbal teas like fennel and peppermint to increasing our consumption of high fibre foods and potassium.

So here’s a list of some ingredients to minimise feeling bloated. Not only will these help you feel more comfortable but it will help you kick-start your way to a flatter tummy. And to me the latter is ever so important as I prepare to enter a sports modelling competition which I will be blogging about towards the end of the week.

Top ingredients to kick the bloated feeling 

High fibre foods

Fibre has the function of helping clean you out by forcing through debris that may be trapped in the gut. Try oats at brekky and new potatoes at dinner.

Potassium

Potassium encourages the body to get rid of excess salt and fluid. Bananas are great for this as is asparagus. Plus the banana is a great snack that can keep you going until your next meal.

Cherries

This scrumptious fruit helps to stimulate and cleanse the system by removing toxins from the kidneys. For an added bonus, if they are eaten with a handful of seeds, it will help balance out blood sugar levels which will help keep you full for longer. 

Pro-biotics

Found in live yoghurt, it helps you to digest more efficiently and boost your immune system.

Essential Fat

Not all fats are ‘bad.’ This source of fat can be found in seeds and salmon and they have anti-inflammatory benefits so may aid inflammation of the bowel. Try a handful of sunflower and pumpkin seeds as a snack or in porridge.

Antiseptic properties

 These can be found in honey can fight mild infections which may be adding to your bloating.

Olive oil

Apparently this has traditionally proved to relieve symptoms of constipation. But remember oil is still oil so use sparingly.

Quick tips to avoid the bloated feeling….

  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly
  • Don’t drink through a straw, and sip, rather than gulp, your beverages
  • Quit smoking
  • Pay attention to foods and drinks that cause you discomfort, then avoid or limit them
  • Avoid foods that contain sorbitol or other sugar alcohols (these could be found in drinks, candy, gum or breath fresheners. 
  •  So there you have it – you really don’t need to suffer because there is a way around it as with most problems! To a healthier flatter tum tum 🙂
